We've read Inkheart already and are working our way through Inkspell. I read it to them. I like the books, but I find she rambles on a bit, getting carried away with descriptions. I edit them out as I read, I confess.

We've tried stories in the car, but they don't work so well, or at least haven't so far. Someone always starts yakking and annoying someone else because they can't hear.

I downloaded "Foreskin's Lament" by Shalom Aushlander, who has some American Life pieces, and also has done some great stuff for the New Yorker. Vowell is on my wish list, as is Julia somebody (from Saturday Night Live), who writes about looking for God in a very funny way.

Tons of TAL stories have book references, making my list of actual reading longer and longer.

We listened to DragonRider by Cornelia Funke on CD on a long car trip, and all the kids loved it (6yo, 11yo, 14yo). The oldest had previously read it on his own.

I'm guessing you can find it as a download now too.

And for you:
The Thirteenth Tale, Diane Setterfied (modern gothic mystery with a great twist)

There Is No Me Without You, Melissa Fay Greene (riveting, heartbreaking, inspiring account of AIDS orphans in Ethiopia)

Assassination Vacation, Sarah Vowell (a funny view of American history through examinations of three assassinated presidents)

Also fun for the kids:
Inkspell and
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

I love my iPod too. It's the only thing that keeps me on the elliptical trainer. I LOVE This American Life, have a secret crush on Ira Glass, and will now read Fraud based on your recommendation. My kids love listening to audiobooks in the car to/from school; it keeps them from bickering and we love talking about the stories. I won't tell you about audible.com for audiobooks. Oops.
